This is an article I published in Insurance Thought Leadership. The big picture is that flood risk is extremely difficult to quantify. A few inches of distance or elevation could change loss estimates dramatically.
But all is not lost. With today’s technology, we know more than ever about where buildings stand and more importantly the elevation at those locations and whether they are elevated enough to avoid susceptibility to flood waters. Once we know how a location will behave to potential flooding scenarios, it becomes easier to segment the risk into low, medium or high and begin scoring.
A big thanks to Ivan Maddox at Intermap.com for co-authoring.
